Salvation South has three sonnets from the highways project; I’m grateful to the editors, whose mission of discovery and truth-telling about the South I’ve admired for many years.

As part of National Poetry Month, I’m grateful to Deep South for taking two poems, one a post-hurricane poem written last year, and the other one of the ongoing pieces mapping the state highways of Mississippi in sonnets. All the poems from this past month are worth a read; my thanks to the editors.

Next month I’m delighted to be giving a lecture on the poetics of the American Gulf South at the 2023 New Orleans Poetry Festival, focusing on the state of Mississippi — this talk will be a revised and updated version of the lecture from last year at the Mississippi Poetry Society, with new works and new poets under discussion. Even better news is that poet and critic C.T. Salazar will serve as the respondent for the lecture. Both of us are looking forward to a great conversation.
